United Kingdom - London Bankside

When we talk about cuisine, when it comes to Europe, the first country that comes to mind is undoubtedly France. But I discovered more than just excellent teas in England and I really tried it and liked it! Fish & Chips, a delicious recipe for breaded or fried fish that I learned to like back in England. In fact, when served in English restaurants, the dish comes with French fries (chips) and mushy peas. In some places, they even add a type of beans with tomato sauce, known as baked beans. Well, fried fish is really delicious. They season it with vinegar and malt (the famous beer) and that's why it has a special flavor, different from fish seasoned with lemon!

But the funniest thing is that traditionally this dish was served wrapped in newspapers. Later, it started being served in plastic bags! Not very pleasant, apparently! And now, we find them, even in pubs, being served in boxes, like our pizza boxes!

Ok! Appearances, in this case, really are deceiving, as the taste is delicious!

Recipe:
Ingredients: (for two people)
- 04 potatoes
- oil for frying
- 1/2 kg of white fish (or cod)
- 1 cup of wheat flour
- 1 teaspoon of salt- 1 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1 teaspoon of white vinegar - 1 cup of water - 1 can of beer

Preparing the potatoes:
Peel and wash the potatoes. Cut into 1 cm thick sticks. Keep the sticks in very cold water while you heat the oil for frying in a deep frying pan. Place the potatoes to dry and dry even more with a cloth, to remove all the cold water. Fry in small batches, so that the oil does not cool too much, this way they will be crispier. When they are golden, you can remove them with a slotted spoon and let the oil drain in a sieve (preferably an iron one).

Preparation of Breaded Fish:
Leave the fish fillets in a container, soaked in beer for half an hour. Then, dry them. In a container, place the salt and flour. Make a mixture. In another container, place the vinegar and water. And in a third, mix the baking soda and vinegar. Add the vinegar and water mixture to the flour mixture and stir well, until you have a homogeneous mixture. Dry the fish fillets well and then dip them in the batter. Fry in hot oil. Then, drain the oil in the same way you did with the potatoes, in an iron sieve. Now just enjoy! In the spring and summer, the English usually drink a “refreshing” drink called Pims, or Pims and Lemonade! It is a mixture of lemonade (or sourdough) with some red fruits and lots of ice. Another drink that is very popular with the British is Shandy, a beer with a lower alcohol content than other beers, as it only has 2 to 3% alcohol and still has a hint of lemon.

Other English dishes: - Sausage and Mashed Potato; - Roasted Pork; - Backed Potato.
